On the lowest level, just above the backyard and pool, a large space has been subdivided with sliding screens to give each daughter her own bedroom. They share a play area that steps up to the poured concrete retaining wall and contains their collection of toys and drawings:
a vibrantly colored array that would have delighted Ray Eames,
who lived in the house that she and Charles built on the far side of
the canyon. At the base of the tower, the architects reconfigured
the master suite, adding a sitting room furnished with a curvilinear
sofa and table by Vladimir Kagan, and a bathroom that feels as
though it is carved from a solid block of limestone. Trees press in
on every side and filter the sunlight, creating a lost-in-the-woods
feeling. "It's very calm and takes its cues from nature," says Rios.
"Here and throughout the house we tried to honor the spirit of the
original while making it work for a family that lives life to the full."
