But theViceroy isn't just a story
about selecting furniture. Every project I’ve envisioned
began by taking the time to really understand how interior
architecture creates relationships that convey a sense of place
and time. Only then can I start building the layers, playing
with scale, size and shape. The architecture of the hotel
lobby creates a specific kind of dialogue. The space called
for an element of softness so I chose dramatic draperies and
reflective elements that enhance the space. The chandeliers
add another layer of drama, bridging night and day. Then,
of course, I added a layer of finishes: wallpaper, paint, metal
and millwork. And the final dimension: the accessories.
Each space has its own spirit and, its own personality with
quirks, passions and needs—function is, of course, essential.
A room should always have its own vibe and dramatic
unfolding. In the Viceroy, the restaurant is an expansive
space so I started with a palette that created depth and
intimacy. But I wouldn’t have been able to give it an honest
sense of self if I had just used the same chair over and
over, and guests would be in Snoozeville. So, when I was
shopping for chairs, I sought many pieces that would allow
guests to move through the many moments of the day. In
essence, it’s these discoveries in Paris, London, Tokyo, Miami
and Los Angeles that mirror the Viceroy’s own complex
character: all the little well-traveled and exotic parts and
pieces are what ensure every experience will be as diverse
as the guests n
