For these reasons, I am supporting France’s
candidacy for UNESCO heritage status to be the
first country in the world whose gastronomy would
be formally recognized by the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
who, in 2003, adopted the Convention for the
Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage
to preserve “oral traditions and expressions”
and “performing arts, social practices, rituals
and festive events; knowledge and practices
concerning nature and the universe; traditional
craftsmanship.”
I believe that French products and cooking
deserve this official recognition and protection. It
is not a matter of saying that French cuisine is in
danger or that it is the best, but we have to show
that eating well and appreciating good food is
part of the French identity. The petition isn’t only to
recognize certain products, but to celebrate the
