travel and trade undoubtedly knows: India is one of
the brightest, fastest-rising stars in the global economy.
“Such a point in the country’s history,” Wilson notes,
“is a fascinating moment in which to explore India’s
homes and their design and decoration.”
India Contemporary
pilots a whirlwind tour of 27
dwellings, from a Delhi mansion to an apartment
in Mumbai, offering design details and short essays
about homeowners’ roots and inspiration. The first
section, Future Present, explores the coexistence of
India’s traditional past with its rapidly unfolding
future, while Import Export opens doors to design
and craft from every corner of the world. In the
former, a newly built farmhouse features breathtaking
Hindu religious artwork on its utilitarian walls. In the
latter, an apartment that began as a blank concrete
box becomes a vibrant, textured—and extremely
pink—buffet of items from Afghanistan, Australia,
Mumbai and the Netherlands. In
India Contemporary
,
the opulent décor, rich silks and glittering gold
typically associated with India are replaced with
subtler touches: fabric inspired by a monsoon cloud,
colonial-era botanical prints, a well-worn dhurrie.
