India is astonishingly comfortable in its own skin. The
sheer friction of many opposing forces in its history
would have left a lesser newly-autonomous nation
in ruins—torn apart by the ancestral East and the
colonizing West. Instead, India adopted a manifold
breadth of character, embracing history, emboldened
by modernity.

, a photographic survey of the
country’s hybrid aesthetic. Lauded in the introduction
as “New Indian Chic,” it is brought to life by a growing
middle class, affectionately dubbed “harmonious
schizophrenics” by Indian writer Pavan Varma. The
