From there, I’m off to Santral Istanbul, the
most ambitious city development project
in recent years and part of Turkey’s bid for
European Union membership. With Istanbul
Bilgi University, the city co-opted an early 20
th
century Ottoman power station and turned it
into a campus for art students. Notable Turkish
architects Nevzat Sayin and Emre Arolat
designed a new wing that houses a modern
art museum, and the old main building is now
an energy museum.
Tired, but full of new impressions, I let my
driver steer me to the shores of the Bosporus.
Up in Arnavutkoy, a former fishing village
that has long since been swallowed up by
the larger city, I marvel at the ornate 19
th
century wooden summer palaces lining the
shore. A local journalist has told me that the
water surrounding Istanbul helps ease the
hectic energy of the metropolis, infusing it
with peace and serenity. Sitting in one of the
many hip cafes of Arnavutkoy, looking at the
Bosporus Bridge connecting Europe and Asia,
the green hills and majestic villas on the other
side of the strait and watching the boats pass,
I decide she is absolutely right n
