Empanadas in Little Havana or sushi at Nobu?
Key Biscayne sunbathing or South Beach mojitos?
There are hundreds of reasons to visit Miami.
Places to go, definitely people to see. But one
reason quietly taking hold of in-the-know types
the world over is Miami’s stealthy ascent to design
mecca status. Not Paris. Not London. And look
out, New York.
Ambra Medda, a 26 year old designer who
moved to Miami from New York City three years
ago, explains why: “Everything has been done
in New York. In Miami, there’s no structure or law.
In New York, designers are all on top of each
other, competing. People have forgotten why
they’re doing what they’re doing. People are
open-minded here and receptive to change.”
This is one reason Medda co-founded Design
Miami and Design Miami/Basel, the sibling of
Art Basel. Design Miami, held for three days in
December, featured installations by 26 of the
world’s leading design galleries, performances,
