bluestocking
poolside with slim aarons
Slim Aarons’ photos of the jet set elite make one
thing clear: 50 years ago, Paris Hilton wouldn’t have
known what to do with herself. People magazine’s
first issue was ages away, and the Rich—instead of
chasing publicity and being chased by paparazzi—
passed time in exclusive enclaves. Surrounded only by
each other and all the delicious privileges of wealth,
their destinations spanned continents and climates: a
Sardinian club one day, a chalet in the Alps the next.
But always at center, that great symbol of the Good
Life, the glittering azure waters of a swimming pool.
This is the life depicted in Poolside With Slim Aarons,
a collection of some 200 mid-to-late 20th century
photographs by the prolific shutterbug whose oft-
quoted life’s ambition was to photograph “attractive
people doing attractive things in attractive places.”
George Allen “Slim” Aarons, a war photographer
hell-bent on celebrating the surviving post-war world,
something new!
