“The clients wanted the space to feel modern and contemporary without feeling cold,” says
Ed Ku of a loft he and his partner Etienne Coffinier designed in New York's SoHo neighborhood.
“Our concern was how we could add warmth.” While retaining original cast-iron columns and
14-foot-high ceilings in the former art gallery, the designers introduced wide-plank mahogany
floors, translucent wool curtains, rich rugs and dramatic custom-made crystal chandeliers from
Amsterdam's Studio Edward Van Vliet. “We tried to create a space that is defined by major
statements, whether they be architectural or furnishings,” says Ku. “A space that was uncluttered
and had only things that were important.”n
