“I've always practiced modernism, and now, more than ever, I'm a minimalist,” says San Francisco
designer Orlando Diaz-Azcuy. “With this penthouse, I created an urbane apartment, true to
my belief in a modernism that is pure, spare and luxurious.” The designer's seventeenth-floor
residence in Pacific Heights reflects the precision and formality of that belief. Flush-mounted
doors with concealed hinges, cabinets with mitered edges, doors that disappear into walls, all
complement the seamless planes of white and gray Venetian plaster walls. “These are the details
that only an architect or craftsman would notice,” he observes. The penthouse also serves as
a laboratory for the designer's uncompromising concepts. “I'll keep changing the apartment,”
says Diaz-Azcuy. “I'll keep experimenting.” n
