"It's important to consider the vernacular of a house and try to
find the essence of that style to instill in the kitchen," says designer
Steven Gambrel. "In this case it was a nineteenth-century house
in the historic whaling village of Sag Harbor, New York, so
I was inspired by simple, durable materials. The wood-plank
ceiling, painted white, is strong enough to work with the walls,
which are Grove Brickworks tile from Waterworks. I used
Calacatta Paonazzo marble for the countertops, and the floors
are reclaimed marble that came from the Museum of Modern
Art's former sculpture garden. The stove and refrigerator are
by Viking, and the custom hood is from Rangecraft. The sinks
are custom, but the faucets are by Steamvalve. The lights are
vintage glass with custom fittings."
