In his latest book, Mr. Color: The Greenbrier and Other Decorating
Adventures, Varney re;ects on individual projects, lending his engaging
voice to satisfy burning curiosity over how these rooms come together.
Varney's compendium of color and space plays as a symphony.
(Incidentally, a new CD has just been released, his ;rst, Music With Style). His
connection with color is most unique—visual constructions of tonality—a
continuum of related themes that modulates to and from every room
without e;ort.
What makes Mr. Color intriguing is Varney's ability to instantly
engage a sophisticated visual experience by not having to intellectualize
how one got there. Complementing the book's theme are images of
inviting spaces, furniture groupings, art and accent pieces. "I am a
collector of all things Dorothy Draper," says Varney. "When new owners of
the Fairmont decided to redecorate the landmark property, the Draper
pieces were auctioned o; at Sotheby's in Los Angeles. I sent my son
Sebastian to purchase all the Dorothy Draper pieces he could—they now
adorn the Grand Pavilion at the Grand Hotel—where they look even more
grand." It does not get more passionate than that.
Over two hundred pages, Mr. Color: The Greenbrier and Other
Decorating Adventures will be arriving this fall Shannongrove Press 60
