The latest playground is Marina Bay Sands, designed by architect Moshe Safdie, who first made his mark with Habitat ' 67, Montreal's ultra-modular ziggurat of a
housing community. Marina Bay Sands is a multifaceted
resort, the first (and only one of two) to obtain a gaming
license in Singapore. It delivers three 55-story towers
crowned by the Sky Park, a 340-meter-long by 38-meter-
wide suspended structure flaunting a 146-meter infinity-edge pool. The complex rules like a hero of structural
steel over the flush urbanism of the Marina Bay district,
which will play host to the annual nocturnal Formula
One Grand Prix September 23 through 25.
Singapore is home to several other blue-chip
contemporaries, such as Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates,
auteurs of the Marina Bay Financial Centre, and RSP
architects, designers of the futuristic La Salle College
of the Arts campus, winner of the Singapore Institute of
Architects' Building of the Year award in 2008. RSP also
authored the upgrade of Terminal 2 at Changi Airport,
named the World's Best Airport by Skytrax in 2010.
