For Rochon, “the simplicity of the space creates
a light, elegant oasis.” He subtly changed the color harmonies
to set off a mixture of contemporary and classic furnishings.
Persian and Calcutta marbles are combined with white linen,
and natural silks in pastels and tones of beige. Lalique crystal
birds hover over the lobby and every room has a bowl of fresh-cut flowers. The intent was to infuse the interiors with natural light
and the beauty of the Provencal landscape, as distilled in the
17-acre garden.
Picasso prints and a mural in the style of Jean Cocteau recall
two of the artists who were regular guests of the hotel. Though
Rochon has finely honed taste he insists that his clients come first
“Success is measured by the people who pay and sleep there,
eat and come back,” he says. “If you design something for your
ego, you will have no guests.”
They are still coming and, if they can tear themselves away from
this oasis, will discover the landscapes that inspired generations
of artists to settle in this region, and see their work in a score
