citY liKe Bangkok, the idea of the home as a calm and
peaceful refuge becomes highly seductive. that is the thinking
behind designer david collins' new Mahanakhon apartment in
Bangkok.
fusing the sophistication of an upscale serviced Manhattan
apartment, along with thai inspiration in color and textures, the
apartment is a hymn to luxurious living, tranquility and the power
of bespoke design. it is a glimpse of future living in the soaring
Mahanakhon tower—an innovative skyscraper that appears to
dissolve and soften in parts like a pixilated photograph.
"We wanted to design a peaceful space within the city, which
is what you really want a home to be," says london-based collins,
who knows thailand intimately after many trips to the region. "You
can go to bars for stimulus, sports grounds for excitement and
the cinema for escapism, but more and more our homes are
a refuge and a sanctuary. i wanted the apartment to reflect
some of the feeling of peace and tranquility that draws so many
people to thailand in the first place."
if space equals luxury, then this apartment embraces the idea
with a generous, elegant entrance hall and a large living room,
lightly divided into separate zones for sitting and entertaining,
whether by the fireside or by the windows. the dining room, to
one side of the sitting room, is a recessed gallery with paneled
walls in embroidered navy silk. With parquet floors and crisp white

walls, the palette of soft enticing blues for upholstery, rugs and
artworks, sings with calming notes.
