HIROSHI SUZUKI—AN EXTRAORDINARILY GIFTED
JAPANESE ARTIST WHOSE WORK IS UNIQUE
AND INSTANTLY RECOGNIZABLE
text: tiMothy schroder
Arriving in England in1994,
his adoptive country had a profound affect on his artistic
development. suzuki works in silver‚ but there has never been a
strong tradition of precious metalworking in Japan and had he
stayed he might have chosen a different material altogether.
indeed‚ his approach is more like that of a potter and he likes to
describe his vessels as “ceramics made of silver.” Many aspects of
his work recall Japanese pottery: it has a fluidity that is unusual in
metal and a freedom and spontaneity that recall a pot thrown on
the wheel or modeled from soft wet clay.
