ferrari, a Bauhaus-trained, swiss-German master who emphasized the importance

of craft. Before setting up her chicago office and new York studio, she explored
different cultures around the world, and worked for the top corporate firm of
skidmore, owings & Merrill. this varied experience allows lovell to bridge the divide
between space-making and soft stuff, which challenges many architects and
designers. “it’s all about proportion, and the balance of horizontal and vertical
surfaces,” she explains. “height and tall openings are super-important. we start
with plans and elevations and sketch over those, focusing on materials and the
palette. once we’ve determined the weight of color in a room, it’s time to layer it
with carpets, window coverings, a large sofa. we’re always angling for peaceful—i
want people to feel calm in their environment.”
