When we ask a designer, a chef, artist or
curator about their inspiration, our hope is for a long answer.
A vivid, rambling, dissertation with tangents and eloquent
departures—the kind of conversation that begins in one place
and then veers off into its own exuberant, immortal, frisky rave.
This being the theater of the creative mind, we want to know
everything, and so we ask.
The side effect of all these sparkling divulgences is their
transformation on us, the editors knee-deep in notes and
whirling with backstage privileges. If there was ever a doubt,
yes, the arbiters of interiors spend weeks at a time in awe of
our collaborators and restless with our own spaces, particularly
when the first few images of a photo come in and we lick our lips,
scheming over a few radical possibilities. There are also wistful,
despairing moments when it becomes apparent that no, most of
this will not be possible in a home of 900 square feet. How to take
all that fantasy, shape it with poignant details and present it all in
a striking way—after many (many) sleepless nights, we succeed,
and emerge permanently, magically altered by the sublime
flashes of a few brilliant minds. It is this continuum of muses and
illuminations that make for an infinity of unconventional ideas.
After reading Angelika Taschenś fabulous expositional
Valentine to Berlin, I highly anticipate fewer German phrase
books on the shelves and a sudden, well-guided impulse
to frolic in the German bohemia of art and personality. The
beautiful, bite-sized boxed fancies of wooing lovers are forever
revised by Spain´s celebrated pastry chef Oriol Balaguer, and
his architectural chocolate creations elevated beyond sweets
and into passionate soliquies. In Connecticut, Lynne Scalo does
her own sophisticated mojo, making glamorous moves out of
a classical beat. And to Nice, where designer Joseph Karam
reinvents the holiday retreat, a gorgeous sunlight space with élan
that arouses any number of cultivated contemporary desires.
For now, in this issue, a collection of our latest obsessions to bring
inspiration to a drab winter day.
