The post-party ritual is not the glamorous stuff—reconfiguring
the dishwasher, scrubbing away red wine mementos,
gossiping in monkey slippers, another aspirin. Before even
considering a collapse, there are things yet to do, poignant
questions to ponder: what are we going to do with all this
food? Did we really go through all that liquor? Why am I
still eating? The guests are now gone and this time is spent
floating over the piquant details, comparing notes about
the evening’s festivities because everyone knows that the
host’s reveling happens only through the elegant cameos
and short, sequined bursts of hugs, kisses and flush-faced
hellos. Then off to the kitchen to cosset a temperamental
baked cheese concoction and work out a back-up plan.
It’s always back to the kitchen.
Perhaps these are only my kind of parties, but at 3 a.m.
when it’s completely silent outside, and there is nothing
more to soak or spoon into a plastic container, the dreamy
low-lit replay of the night’s events becomes the sweet,
quintessential holiday moment. Despite all the mania
and frantic preparation, that was a good party. And so,
in favoring the seasonal tradition of taking on too much,
we present our special kitchen section in this issue of
interiors—a rather satisfying spread of books, products and
designs meant to graciously tempt the gourmand during
the busiest time of the year. While there are an infinite
number of places to read about, expound upon and
blog about food, we believe that entertaining, cooking
and eating are magnificently and merrily entwined in the
culture of home...even if your apartment can welcome
only a handful of friends without breaking the fire code.
If the craving is for interior design, art and sophisticated
living, we hope this issue spoils you as usual. There are
many, many other gorgeous distractions for those who
would rather not think of another meal to prepare or a
