in pursuit of
ARTIST
fashion
A time to gather brushes. To think about open
white spaces. Selections will be made from the
splattered mix of favorites in little tins and fine
wooden boxes, all the familiar effects floating like
shipwrecked treasures along crystalline vision,
ready to be grasped. The artist has a ritual, moves
a little superstitiously, the precursors of mad
genius or deep meditation before the start of a
new work. Of all the ways to lure a latent image
out of hiding, in the beginning there is the set-
up and the tools. Something to draw on, to draw
with, to sketch, smudge, blot, create—the simplest
things an artist possesses are everything. They are
the elegant accompaniment to the process.
