You might think the most daunting problem
confronting Denis Schaming, the fellow in charge of
curating “Splendours of the Empire: Napoleon and
the Imperial Court,” was rounding up the exact tri-
corned hat the emperor sported at Waterloo. But no.
According to Schaming, “The biggest challenge we
faced curating this exhibition was when we found
that the most exceptional pieces on the subject
were not always pieces which could enter certain
rooms of this medieval castle! Unhappily, we couldn't
accept the very wide painting representing the Sacre
of Napoleon: the painting was too wide, it didn't pass
