THE FRIEND oF A FRIEND’S Co-WoRKER’S SPoUSE.
or something to that effect. These crowded concentric
circles everyone moves in—they offer such detailed
introductions. By now the cursory things—polite chitchat,
the weather-job-vacation cocktail—these are second
nature. Meeting everyone by extension makes it difficult
to relax; and a room full of anxious molecules jostling each
other with blundering elbows will produce only nervous
energy. This is my non-scientific guess.
But how to actually get to know someone. To go beyond
being a guest. This would be a fantastic, and slightly
radical move. In between courteous sips, life on the pulsing
meridian has that search in progress, thoroughly canvassing
each conversation like some promising find in a second-
hand shop. After enough rotations on the social circuit, you
learn that proximity is a very convincing counterfeit for real
connection.
Intimacy is something we want in this magazine. Not
simply by moving in the lens, but with the tone of everything
featured here. If we defined it by dropping names and
running party photos, noses would still be pressed against
glass, eyes vying for a better peek; interiors could be a
magazine about what you missed out on. But given a
choice, we would rather get personal with the designers,
artists and creative minds we know. We would rather come
in close. Delicate and intense work, but what it reveals.
In this issue we wandered into first person. We wanted to
hear the gorgeous introspection of Chef Massimo Bottura
when art-jazz-color reveries tumble from his head and
into the mix of imaginative dishes he creates for osteria
Francescana. Captivated, we share, in confidence, Lynn
Yaeger’s stunning details about milliner Stephen Jones’
journey as the guest curator for an outstanding hat
exhibition at London’s V&A. And to Milan, into the living
room of Giampiero Peia and Marta Nasazzi—a design
couple whose work/life spaces entwine. When they finally
stop to take a breath and tell of their future plans, there is
no pretense or professional distance: It is as though you are
right there, inside, invited to stay.
