A century to contemplate the menu—this is not the
ideal dinner companion. I have actually been on
this date before. If food were a binary code, the
gourmand might forgive, but for those of us with
abysmal cooking abilities, decisions about a meal
are made amorously and with the lustful anticipation
of someone hungry for more than their own culinary
moxie with the microwave. The epicureans know
avor; they taste, experiment, live in their aprons
and possibly dream in metric conversions. They
are to be wooed with excellent conversation and
promises of ne wine. While assembling interiors’
rst kitchen section, we imagined them—their
spaces and cravings—and devoted several pages
to pursue all the striking and artistic ways cereal
is kept in waiting of its bowl. Idiosyncrasies in the
pantry; the perfectionist tendencies at work in
the vegetable drawer—it’s all there. Hospitality
at its sparkling best this year, it is inevitable that
lingering near a hot plate of hors d’ oeuvre on the
counter while the host tangos with an industrial
sized baking sheet, will o er a moment to have a
good look around and discover a personality and
life that is de nitive, and as expressive as the art or
the photographs. The kitchen reveals more than any
other room in the house, and we see its design as
a cool refraction of person and place, even if the
most illuminating discovery is a frightful collection of
tropical island shot glasses (memorabilia pre-grad
school?). Within this space, illusions are chased
away by dishes, burnt expectations, entertaining
company, perplexing cookbooks and the custom
cabinetry. It is a very real place, zestful and personal.
So completely is taste on display in the kitchen; so
rarely do puns work out this well. There are con dent
moods and crisp details invigorating every setting
we feature in this special section. Ravenously stylish,
