Dear Readers,
When what surrounds has the distinct pleasure to
please, to divert, tread lightly for you may be walking
in the shadow of greatness. It hides everywhere, if only
you know where to look and how to illuminate it. That
eternal search to cast a golden, resplendent glow across
a sometimes bleak (or worse, banal) horizon crystallizes
with perfected harmony in interiors’ latest incarnation.
From the far corners of the world, genius gets no respite—
there will be no lazy break in the sun on our watch.
From this place, we discovered such life forces. They
slice through the masterful modernization of ancient
Japanese traditions illustrated by Kyoto’s new, 13-room
boutique Hotel Screen, and, halfway around the world,
through the energetic pairing of contemporary and
modern with flourishes of storied, majestic Lisbon in a
private bachelor’s residence. Even the most wearied
design soul will lighten when touring the sprawling,
elegant yet spare Soho loft reworked by Coffinier Ku
Design. Despite the edited nature of these stylish, hip
quarters, each line, whether recalling the Old World
or downtown chic, entices and satisfies. Elsewhere,
Chicago designer Josephine Berault set her narrative
to the leitmotif of museum-quality 19th century paintings,
including works by Rembrandt and the lesser known,
but equally cherished William-Adolphe Bouguereau. The
refrain echoes urbane sophistication. The ideal, relaxed
counterpoint is found points south in an Uruguayan
beachside retreat by architect Martín Gómez; all notions
of formality drift out the window, giving way instead to
rusticity and ease.
Slivers of paradise still do exist: despite the awful
business of business! At Parisian Bernard Chauveau
Éditeur, an atelier devoted to crafting exquisite books,
affections lavish between the covers of sumptuous hand-
crafted volumes. In another instance, our conceptual
exploration of simplicity at home opens a universe of
ingenious designs created by a desire to capture the
essence of purity. While, the complex gastronomic
decadence dreamed up by rising-star chef Graham Elliot
Bowles for his just-opened eponymous restaurant alights
on the tongue like a series of unpredictable, hedonistic
explosions. Expect no glassy waters and quiet winds from
interiors—the doldrums find no rest here.
